Southern Yacht Club
About Southern Yacht Club
The Southern Yacht Club (SYC), located in New Orleans, Louisiana, stands as the second oldest yacht club in the United States, founded in 1849. With a history rooted in the Gulf Coast resort of Pass Christian, Mississippi, SYC initially served as a retreat for locals seeking respite from the city's summer heat. It quickly evolved into a cornerstone of the American sailing community, organizing regattas and fostering competitive sailing from its base on Lake Pontchartrain. Throughout its history, the club has been a beacon of tradition and excellence in yachting, playing host to numerous national and international champions, including four U.S. Sailing Olympic medalists. Despite challenges such as the Civil War, yellow fever epidemics, and hurricanes - including the significant destruction of its clubhouse by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 - SYC has continually promoted a Corinthian spirit of competition, sportsmanship, and hospitality.
Sailing and racing events
With a proud tradition of sailing and racing, SYC hosts an annual schedule filled with events for sailors of all levels. Highlights include the longstanding annual Race to the Coast and participation in prestigious competitions like the Rolex NYYC Invitational Cup, underlining SYC's prominent role in competitive sailing.
