Ocean Cruising Club
About Ocean Cruising Club
The Ocean Cruising Club, founded in 1954, is a unique global sailing club focused on long-distance ocean cruising. With no fixed clubhouse, the OCC views the world's oceans as its home, fostering a community of sailors who have completed significant ocean passages. Membership is granted based on accomplishments at sea, requiring a non-stop passage of at least 1,000 nautical miles in a vessel under 70 feet. The OCC supports its members with a network of over 200 Port Officers worldwide, providing assistance and camaraderie wherever they sail. The club also publishes the "Flying Fish" journal and offers mentoring programs, annual awards, and a youth sponsorship program, reflecting its commitment to fostering seamanship and sharing knowledge across the global sailing community.
Social facilities
While the Ocean Cruising Club does not have a physical clubhouse, it maintains a strong social network through its global network of Port Officers and regional events. These gatherings, held worldwide, provide opportunities for members to connect, share experiences, and support each other. Social activities range from formal dinners to informal meet-ups, all centered on the shared experience of ocean cruising.
Sailing and racing events
The OCC organizes various rallies, cruises, and musters worldwide, bringing together members to celebrate their love of ocean sailing. Events are held in diverse locations, including the Hebrides, the West Country of England, and the Canary Islands. These events allow members to exchange stories, plan future voyages, and strengthen the bonds of the OCC community.
Other activities
In addition to sailing events, the OCC actively supports the sailing community through mentoring programs, youth sponsorships, and educational initiatives. The club emphasizes environmental responsibility and good cruising practices, with members often involved in research and advocacy for marine conservation. The OCC also celebrates outstanding achievements in sailing through its annual awards program, recognizing members who have made significant contributions to the sport.
