Detroit Yacht Club
About Detroit Yacht Club
Founded in 1868, the Detroit Yacht Club (DYC) is one of the oldest and largest yacht clubs in the United States. Located on Belle Isle, a large island park in the Detroit River, the DYC boasts a Mediterranean-style clubhouse designed by George D. Mason, which opened in 1923. The clubhouse is recognized as the largest of its kind in the country and features a rich architectural history, including significant expansions in the mid-20th century. The DYC offers a variety of activities, including boating, swimming, dining, and social events, all set against the backdrop of Detroit's riverfront. The club's legacy is intertwined with the city's maritime history, with notable members like Gar Wood and Edsel Ford contributing to its storied past.
Social facilities
The DYC's clubhouse offers dining rooms, bars, a ballroom, and various lounges. The club regularly hosts events, including formal balls, family-friendly gatherings, and member-exclusive activities. The indoor Olympic-sized pool, one of the few in Detroit, is a popular feature, alongside extensive banquet facilities and outdoor spaces with views of the Detroit River. See facilities here.
Sailing and racing events
Throughout its history, the DYC has been a prominent center for sailing and powerboat racing. The club has hosted numerous regattas and competitions, with members often participating in prestigious events like the Gold Cup hydroplane races. The DYC continues to support a vibrant boating community with a well-equipped marina and active sailing programs.
Mooring and marina facilities
The Detroit Yacht Club features a marina with over 350 boat wells, offering docking facilities for members. The marina supports a wide range of vessels, making it an ideal base for both competitive and recreational boating on the Detroit River and beyond.
Visiting the club
Visitors to the DYC can enjoy guided tours of its historic clubhouse, which include detailed insights into the club’s architectural features and notable members. Reciprocal members from other yacht clubs are welcome, and public tours are available by appointment. The DYC’s location on Belle Isle provides easy access to Detroit's cultural and recreational attractions.
Around the club
Situated on Belle Isle, the DYC is close to Detroit’s key attractions, including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Historical Museum, and the RiverWalk.
